How to Participate in Willow Arts Community Programs

FOLKS MUST BE A WILLOW MEMBER BEFORE ATTENDING PROGRAMMING

Niagara Artists’ Centre Collage+ Workshops for Youth

Willow and the NAC have partnered to offer three workshops for Youth this fall. These workshops are open to Niagara youth ages 17 to 29 and will take place in the Willow Studio.

Willow members, and family/friends of members, ages 17 to 29 are welcome to register at the links below.

Collage+ Experimental Photography
Saturday, October 17 from 12PM-6PM
Instructors: Jenn Judson + Amber Lee Williams

In this full-day workshop, participants will merge found imagery with alternative photography. The first half of the workshop focuses on creating collages using a wide selection of magazines, with guidance on how to play with composition and contrast. These collages will then be scanned, edited, and converted into negative transparencies.

Participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of the cyanotype process, including mixing chemicals, coating paper, making exposures, and developing. Each participant will complete a cyanotype of their original collage.

This workshop is ideal for those looking to expand their collage or photography practice, or for those new to these mediums who want to learn foundational techniques!

Collage+ Experimental Film
Saturday, November 7 from 12PM-6PM
Instructors: Jenn Judson + Connor Wilkes

In this Collage + Experimental Filmmaking Workshop, participants will explore the intersection of analog filmmaking, handmade animation, and collage-based practices. Through experimental processes, participants will work directly with 16mm and 35mm film, creating handmade and direct-on-film animations alongside physical collage techniques.

Participants will manipulate film by hand through scratching, painting, drawing, cutting, splicing, layering, and other experimental techniques, transforming the film strip into a space for visual exploration. These processes will be combined with collage methods to create unique, tactile moving images and animations.

Each participant will complete small experimental filmstrips and hand crafted 35mm slides, with heavy emphasis on exploration throughout the session. This workshop is ideal for those looking to expand their film or mixed-media practice, or for those new to those mediums!

Collage+ Sound
Saturday, December 5 from 12PM-6PM
Instructors: Jenn Judson + Matt Nguyen

In this Collage+ Sound workshop, participants will explore intuitive collage and sound-making. We will begin by creating individual collages guided by ambient music and intuition. These visual ideas will transform into sound exploration using instruments and found objects. Together, we will experiment with listening, improvisation and collaboration to create a group sound piece.

This workshop is ideal for those who enjoy collaboration and experimental art. No musical experience is needed – just curiosity and a willingness to explore!
